Bracketed beauty (reciprocal video)

Dear Gentle Reader,

No one commented on the shift in status from a humble scribe to a fearsome scribe in the posting on the culinary joys of Cambodia.

Sometimes your scribe is fearsome.

Most do not believe it.

Your Heroine's eyes widened when I told her I was fearsome.

Then she snorted with laughter.

Some of you were not so keen on the spider of the apocalypse as a food choice. I thought that this demonstrated your scribe's fearsome potenial.

Some of you seemed to agree.

The lovely Heidelweiss told me that she cruelly gouged out her own eyes with knitting needles to avoid looking at the "hideous picture of crinkled black death" in the above mentioned post (see the first comment for proof, if you don't believe me...).

I hope it was not so, but you never know...

Wait till I tell you about special Cambodian eggs (and someone reads it to Heidelweiss... ...what will she lose next?).

The first visitors to accompany me on a reprise trip to Angkor Wat and the other Wats (I have some great jungle treks planned out) get to experience Cambodian eggs with me, and take pictures, so that your scribe can set the story into the clay with visual aids.

Anyway, thinking of this story reminded me of eggs and then of eyes. And eyes reminded me of the two found visual objects, videos, which I would like to share with you today.

The two videos are Validation and Doll Face.

Validation is 16 min 23 seconds long and is about internal beauty and, obliquely, its external manifestations.

Doll Face is 4 min 13 seconds long and is about external beauty and, obliquely, its internal manifestations.

Validation is a lovely story. It is sentimental and could be considered uplifting.

Validation was written, directed and composed by Kurt Kuenne. TJ Thyne is the main actor.

Doll face is another lovely story written and animated by Andrew Thomas Huang. Doll Face is more likely to fall into the disturbingly poingnant bracket. I consider it thought-provoking.

I enjoyed them both and think that they bracket beauty well. I am curious regarding your comments and feedback...

First, Validation...

Second, Doll Face...

Hello Elaine,

I completely agree with you.

To some degree everything I post is as much about the reflections that come back as what I offer up and out the e-door.

I am observing the web while putting forth objects onto its insatiable yet indifferent and all-engulfing surface.

You're guess regarding the movie is correct.

The first piece actually is a movie, albeit a short movie. It is sweet, and profound, but the second short has far more levels buried within it and easily accessible.

The first, longer piece is also much harder for non-English-as-a-first-language speakers. I fully recognise that.

Between them, though, they do bracket internal and external beauty, however, and the impact that the internal and and external worlds have on each other.

Tschuess,
Chris

Fearsome?
Oblique! Aloha, dragon-survivor.

Yes, amazing what readers note, and what they "miss." An ongoing experiment in communication indeed. Finding you was obviously a big mark in the plus column, Chris

The first video: one never knows how life is going to turn out after providing a simple gesture of kindness to another.

The second video: a creepy sci-fi video with an obvious message of beauty is only skin deep and not to become so enamoured over style.

Cloudia, Double cheers.

Barbara, Yes, although I tend to think that there is a fair bit more to both. I certainly see Jungian elements in the second, and references to Narcissus, amongst others.

You make us work, Chris! ;) But glad you did.

I loved the first video for its fairytale feel-good-ness. Brings out the point that most people are willing to take, but few are willing to give. And the butterfly effect of just a simple sincere compliment.

The second one is fantastic! Conveys so much with brilliantly simple imagery.

Hi Chris, Checked out your spider post. Being a vegetarian, I couldn't appreciate it. :( So I am with your wife on this one!

While on the topic of spiders, your wife may like my post from Nov 19, 2008:

Bindu,

Glad you enjoyed them, and I quite enjoyed your spider post too. On of my earliest memories as a child was tending a large garden spider in the lane outside our home for the whole summer, until a workman's van wiped out the web; I was quite distraught...

Tschuess,
Chris
