3WW Offering

Image of a Hong Kong construction worker preparing a site for drilling out foundation piles.Dear Gentle Reader,

I still like 3WW. This week the words are disarray, rabble, and validate.

This week sees four entries; one American sentence and three haikus. Or are there only two?

Tschuess,
Chris

A Tory Lord speaks
to Eric Blair... (a.k.a.
oh, let them eat cake)

Validate the Proles?
That rabble in disarray?
Just send them TV.

A revolutionary lament for bad planning and discipline:

rabble makes rubble
rebels validate state force
disperse... disarray

Nicely done. Brit politics in a nutshell.

Television is the new cake, isn't it? Good stuff.

Some clever wordsmithing here, I think

Anthony,

Yes... and I am referencing the writer, Eric, not Tony, the ex-Prime Minister. Eric was really the one skewering politics in (one of) his dystopian novel(s), 1984, under his pen name George Orwell.

Blair's protagonist, Winston Smith, is meant to keep the Proles down through disinformation and what we might now call a variant of edutainment. ...And the TV was a two-window allowing access into the Proles' world...

Though Bolshie, Eric's circle certainly included Tory Lords...

ThomG,

Thanks. I think it is.

Mind you, not having owned a television for about a decade I don't see the magic lantern's wizardry that often...

Dave,

Coming from you that is heady praise. Thank you.

Tschuess,
Chris

What was old and pre-new comes around again... nice work!

We didn't have a television in our home until I was a teen. My dad still curses one every chance he gets, but once interested in something on it, you can't tear him away. It does cast a spell in one way or another, as you put it- Wizardry.

Very good haikus on world issues.

Your haikus are awesome.

Great haikus -I really love the last one!

Hey Chris, nice one!
I love references to 1984.
My version of the 3WW is to follow a theme that you put down. Words + haiku + theme(a la Sepiru Chris). I was tempted to allude to Brave New World(futuristic writing theme?) but thought better of it given that it'd be too close to 1984 in my mind. Instead I took the theme to be something along the lines of 'state control'. Specifically, the Russian oligarchy.

Rise and fall of the Russian Oligarch
Validate me. Me!
Steal from the rabble. Give naught!
Credit disarray!

I love the haikus, Sepiru Chris, especially the TV one! Superb!

(You have not had TV for a decade?! An earthling friend of mine was also without TV for a decade - and the licensing authorities just could not believe it! Whole forests must have been wiped out by the amount of letters this beleaguered human was sent!)

Validate the proles :D. This is like Indian politics. Everywhere I guess its the same.

especially liked the last haiku! and, is george orwell really a pen name?? i didn't know that! he is my favorite author (or at least book, 1984.. but Shooting an Elephant was also a great read)

Bindu,

Thanks Bindu. My countenance is going rosy!

PJD,

Thanks PJD. Don't I get credit for the haiku title and the American Sentence title too? Or does there use as titles render them non-poetry?

Tumblewords,

Thank you so much. Goodthinkful words are doubleplusungood... Though its not that old has become pre-new, correctly, from 1984, it would be that newspeak has supplanted oldspeak... though the prequel genesis is what I allude to...

Daily Panic,

I'm with your Dad. And thanks (although the first two (haiku title and accompanying haiku... is that meta-haiku and haiku) are also doubling as literary allusion...

Barbara,

Far too kind, Barbara. And thank you.

Amarettogirl,

Thank you so much! I blush.

Simmers,

I quiet like your haikus, and I really liked recent postings on numbers (#1 and #2) on your blog...

(Check em out everybody...)

Fantastic video, that I will host myself in a month's time...

And a really interesting scientific/numerical look at the numbers involved in Zimbabwean inflation...

Raph,

Thanks Raph. I like your lexicon of G, too. Movies in the cinema or off the computer, but no TV. It allows so much more time for everything else. As a Canadian, all that correspondence is good for the economy. And the environment too. Wood locks up carbon--which is not released if not burned or otherwise broken down. And the nutrients are in the leaves, which are left behind where the tree are felled...

Jeeves,

You could explain it like that to Bertie Wooster, but he might not follow. But, yes.

Floreta,

Yup, the more prosaic Eric Blair was his birth name and working day name...

Hi there, like the way you wangled the Haiku and the American sentence, but to make the first title work you probably need to capitalise a.k.a. to get the syllable count right.

tv is watching you... scary... definitely a generation has been raised in front of the tube watching who knows what...
